Article Excerpt: "...Your application for disability retirement must be received by OPM within one year after the date of your separation. If you have been separated from Federal service for more than 31 days, your former employing agency may no longer have your personnel records and may not be able to recover them in time to process your disability retirement application and submit it to OPM within the one-year time limit. If this is the case, you should submit your application directly to OPM rather than to your agency. ..."

There are many events in a retiree’s life that might affect your benefits, such as Marriage/Divorce, Name Change, Survivor Benefits, Reemployment, Designating Beneficiary, Rep Payee, Court Order, etc. OPM also publishes a pamphlet on Life Events the RI 38-126: Life Events and Your Retirement and Insurance Benefits (for Annuitants)(PDF file) pamphlet is available for download in the OPM Retirement and Insurance Publications directory.

‘Proof of Life’ Notices to Federal Retirees

Article Excerpt: "...the agency cross-matches records from a Treasury Department database of deaths against the federal retirement rolls. If the death has not been reported to OPM, its retirement services (RS) branch attempts to verify the death. If the death is verified, OPM stops the annuitants’ annuity payments and moves to recoup any payments made after the death. If OPM cannot verify the reported death, it sends the annuitant an address verification/proof of life letter—and if there is no response, it can suspend annuity payments pending proof that the person is alive. ..."

The Postal Service Health Benefits (PSHB) Program is a new, separate program within the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program, administered by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) which will provide health insurance to eligible Postal Service employees, Postal Service annuitants, and their eligible family members starting in 2025. The PSHB Program coverage will replace Federal Employees Health Benefit (FEHB) Program coverage for these groups.
